Elam Construction - About Asphalt
Traveling easily from one point to another is something that we take for granted in the 21st century. Most people don't think much about the road surface that gets pounded daily by thousands of vehicles. At Elam Construction, that's our job. Whether you’re driving a mountain pass or going to the grocery store, Elam does our best to make sure your ride is smooth and safe.

What is Asphalt?
Hot bituminous pavement, or asphalt, as it is commonly referred to, is a combination of aggregate materials such as stone, gravel, and sand that are held together and strengthened by asphalt cement (a byproduct of crude oil). The asphalt cement and aggregates are heated and then mixed to create the end product. It is then placed on site and compacted with a heavy roller.

Why Choose Asphalt?
Safety—Asphalt increases tire contact, offers more skid resistance, provides a better visual identification of road markings, and retains heat so that ice forms slowly on the road and melts away quickly.

Economy—Asphalt is cost effective to install, especially on larger jobs, and offers a variety of maintenance options.

Longevity—Asphalt is strong and durable. It is unaffected by salts and chemicals used for winter road maintenance and is less susceptible to cracking that results from freezing and thawing.

Recyclable—Asphalt is 100% recyclable and is the most widely recycled product in the United States.

Smooth ride—Asphalt provides a smooth, quiet, seamless road surface.
