During the planning phase of each gravel pit, Elam develops a
strategy to minimize the effects of our mining operations. A
post-mining land use and reclamation plan is developed to
provide habitat most appropriate for the surrounding area.
Typically, gravel pits are located near existing water bodies
such as rivers. In many cases, the reclaimed gravel pit is
developed into a lake. Reclamation efforts consist of sloping
the excavation site at the most advantageous angle and afterward
planting ground cover that includes grasses, shrubs, and trees.
The resultant lake becomes a valuable resource for wildlife
habitat and migrating birds.

Elam Construction not only provides customers with the highest
quality hot mix asphalt possible but also continuously
researches industry applications to ensure asphalt plants
maintain the highest levels of emission control. Elam’s asphalt
plants meet or exceed all current state and federal standards
for environmental compliance.
Elam incorporates up to 20% recycled asphalt pavement (RAP) into
our asphalt mix. This use of RAP is an environmentally conscious
method that produces a product as high in quality as one using
100% virgin material and does so using less energy. Elam also
uses recycled oil products as a burner fuel in the production of
asphalt.
