- Asphalt is basically an inert & non-dissolving material. That means that it doesn't combine with other materials in water, so it is not harmful in a water environment.
- In 1970, the year of the first Earth Day, worn-out asphalt pavement was discarded in landfills. By the year 2000, asphalt was America's most recycled product.

You might be surprised to learn that 100% of asphalt pavement can be recycled and that it is the most widely recycled product in terms of both percentage and tonnage! And when asphalt is picked up, remixed with some fresh materials, and reused in paving, the quality of recycled asphalt pavement is the same or better than new pave-ment. Elam recycles much of the asphalt and concrete that is removed from a project. We crush it and use it in patching and as refill material for a variety of projects. Even special cardboard tubes that package asphalt fabric are recycled and used to shoot off fireworks!
